I purchased the Zoom Q8 Handy Video Recorder in early 2019, and I felt like I got a little burned by that device.
I was a little cautious about this a new offering, though. So photographers shopping for a wide zoom should definitely consider it-I'd pick it over the older Vario-Tessar T* 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS (which is still on sale for around $1,000), as the FE offers better handling and optics than the aged Zeiss formula. The electronic zoom ring responds much like a mechanical one, and the short range makes it more of a generalist than a video specialist lens, as is the case with the E PZ 18-200mm and other power zooms available for the system. Photographers avoid power zooms because of lag and imprecision when it comes to setting zoom, but both issues are avoided here. The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G avoids the typical pitfalls that pigeonhole power zoom lenses for video, notably when it comes to the focus action. Autofocus is quick and silent, another plus for video.

The optics are parfocal, so the focus point stays set in place when the focal length changes, even when the lens is set to manual focus. If your camera has on-body zoom control you can use it to set the focal length as well. It offers quick zoom changes using the ring, or slower response via the side-mounted rocker. Even so, if you're particularly finicky about mechanical lenses, you may disagree.įor video, the 16-35mm handles quite well. Take that as high praise from a photographer who is often left cold by power zoom lenses. When you take its short zoom range into account, in addition to the well-dampened focus ring, it's easy to forget that you're working with electronic zoom control, not mechanical. Power zooms often suffer from sluggish response to changes in focal length, but the FE PZ 16-35mm is snappy to respond. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the lens did for photo work. I tried the FE PZ 16-35mm with a pair of full-frame Sony cameras, the a7R IV for stills and the vlogging specialist ZV-E1 for video.
